“I Made Money but Had Nothing”—35-Year-Old Trader Finds Secret to Thriving at Gikomba Market

At 35, Joseph Kinuthia had the kind of life that many would envy on paper but curse in reality.

He ran two businesses at the heart of Gikomba Market—one dealing in second-hand clothes, the other in assorted electronics—but somehow, despite the daily bustle and the constant flow of customers, he had nothing to show for it.

No house to call his own, no wife by his side, not even enough to help his sickly mother back in Murang’a.

Every morning, Joseph would wake up before the sun, hoping that today, finally, would be the day his hard work paid off. Yet, by evening, he would sit alone on the cracked pavement outside his shop, counting coins, wondering where it all went wrong.

“How can I make money, and yet my life is stuck?” he would whisper to himself, the shame burning deep in his chest.

His friends and fellow traders noticed his struggles.

While they bought land, built homes, and took their families on trips, Joseph remained trapped in a cycle of effort without reward.

The shame grew heavier with every passing day, especially when his mother called him from Murang’a, her voice frail with illness, asking if he could send money for her medicines.

“I’m trying, mama… I’m really trying,” he would stammer, biting back the tears.

For two long years, Joseph had endured this cycle. He had checked his accounts, tightened his spending, worked longer hours, and even borrowed small amounts to invest more in stock, but still, the profits seemed to slip through his fingers.

Every time he thought he was making progress, unexpected losses, theft, or sudden expenses erased the gains. It was as if his hard work was invisible, like water flowing through a sieve.

Then, one evening, after a particularly rough day in which he had lost nearly half of his week’s earnings to a petty thief, Joseph decided to take a step he had never dared before—he visited a traditional healer.

The healer, an elderly man with deep-set eyes and a calm presence, listened to Joseph’s story without interruption.

“Your struggle is not only about money,” the healer said gently. “There is a blockage. Some things that should flow to you are being held back. But I can show you the way.”

Skeptical but desperate, Joseph agreed to follow the healer’s guidance.

The instructions were simple but required patience: specific rituals, daily affirmations, and a few changes in the way he ran his business. Joseph embraced them fully, even though he didn’t understand everything at first.

Within weeks, subtle changes began to appear. Small wins started stacking up: no more petty theft, customers came more consistently, and deals that used to fall through now succeeded.

He still worked hard, but now there was a rhythm, a flow he had never experienced before. The once-constant anxiety in his chest began to ease.

By the sixth month, Joseph’s businesses were finally starting to generate real profits. He could send his mother money for her medicine, and he even managed to buy a small plot in Gikomba to expand his operations.

The pride and relief were overwhelming, but more importantly, Joseph felt alive again. The shame that had weighed him down for years began to lift.

“Now I understand,” he told himself one evening as he counted the day’s earnings, a smile breaking across his face.

“It’s not just about working hard. It’s about aligning yourself with the flow, knowing when to take guidance, and believing that your efforts will bear fruit.”

Buoyed by his newfound success, Joseph began planning for expansion. He envisioned opening branches across Nairobi, reaching beyond Gikomba to tap into new markets.

His dreams, once buried under years of frustration and self-doubt, were alive again. And this time, they felt attainable.

Despite the turnaround, Joseph never forgot his early struggles. He made it a point to support other young traders who were struggling like he once had.

“I know what it feels like to work and have nothing to show for it,” he would tell them, “but don’t give up. Sometimes, the change comes from the most unexpected places.”

Today, Joseph Kinuthia is not only thriving financially but also emotionally and spiritually.

His businesses are expanding, his mother receives the care she needs, and he has finally started saving toward a home of his own. Though he is still unmarried, he feels complete in a way he never imagined possible.
