Kenya and the Czech Republic have signed a Defence Cooperation Agreement (DCA), marking a significant step in strengthening bilateral military ties between the two countries.

The agreement was signed on Wednesday at the Defence Headquarters in Nairobi by Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya and Czech Republic Ambassador to Kenya Nicol Adamcová.

The ceremony brought together senior government and military officials from both sides, underscoring the growing importance of defence cooperation in Kenya’s foreign and security policy.

Among those who witnessed the signing were Kenya’s Ambassador to Germany, Stella Mokaya Orina, who is accredited to the Czech Republic, and Major General Fredrick Leuria, the Assistant Chief of Defence Forces in charge of Operations, Plans, Doctrine and Training.

Officials from the Ministries of Defence, Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, and representatives of the Czech government were also in attendance.

According to Tuya, the agreement provides a formal and comprehensive framework to guide defence collaboration, particularly in capacity-building and training.

She noted that the DCA was the outcome of discussions that began in 2019, reflecting sustained engagement between Nairobi and Prague over several years.

Kenya and the Czech Republic established diplomatic relations in 1993 and have since maintained cordial ties, supported by a resident Czech diplomatic mission in Nairobi.

In recent years, defence cooperation has emerged as a central pillar of the relationship, aligning with Kenya’s broader efforts to modernise its security sector and enhance regional stability.

The signing comes at a time when Kenya continues to expand strategic partnerships aimed at strengthening its defence capabilities amid evolving security challenges in the region.
