EALA lawmaker Winnie Odinga has dismissed doubts over the party’s ability to field a presidential candidate in the 2027 general elections, insisting that the opposition party remains a formidable political force.
“For what reason would ODM not have a presidential candidate? The party has 8 million members. Are we saying there is not one that is fit enough to run for president? We have always fielded a presidential candidate,” she said.
Odinga, who is also the daughter of the late former party leader Raila Odinga, urged ODM to focus on internal strengthening before engaging in coalition politics.
She called on the party to reenergize its grassroots structures, actively listen to its members, and adhere to its foundational principles.
“I would like ODM to organize itself first before we start to speak about coalitions. I believe ODM needs to strengthen itself, reenergize its grassroots, listen to its members and follow the creed of its people,” she added.
ODM, historically one of Kenya’s largest opposition parties, has often been seen as a kingmaker in coalition politics, but internal cohesion remains a key factor in sustaining its influence.
Winnie Odinga’s comments signal a prioritization of party consolidation over early coalition talks, highlighting the need for internal reforms as ODM prepares for the next electoral cycle.
With a robust membership and a history of presidential bids, ODM appears determined to maintain its relevance and contest the highest office in Kenya come 2027.
