Former Mukurweini MP Kabando wa Kabando has raised eyebrows after criticising a Garundu AIPCA bishop who assured President William Ruto of Mt. Kenya’s support in the 2027 elections during Sunday service.
Kabando says the sermon was more political than spiritual.
Kabando took to X to call out what he described as a “chaotic Sunday political rally in church,” warning that some pastors, whom he dubbed ‘mpesa-pastors’, are using sermons to push personal or political agendas.
“The bishop spoke neither for the church nor for the people of Mt. Kenya,” Kabando wrote, urging congregations not to cheer political messages in places of worship.
The African Independent Pentecostal Church of Africa (AIPCA) has a long history dating back to the 1920s, blending Christian faith with African culture.
Its institutions, including Gìthùngùri Teachers College, historically trained members of the Mau Mau movement. Kabando referenced this legacy to stress that the church should focus on faith, not politics.
He added a warning for worshippers: “Church congregations should refuse to cheer blasphemy.”
