Mercy Makini, the former wife of political activist Morara Kebaso, has publicly responded to remarks made by her former husband amid growing attention over the status of their marriage.
Kebaso had earlier addressed speculation surrounding his relationship with Mercy and claims that he was now engaged to a woman known as Pauline.
While he said he preferred not to discuss his family on social media, he defended Mercy's position as the mother of their three children.
He also urged Kenyans to respect the family's privacy, saying every home has its own way of handling personal matters.
However, Mercy has now challenged Kebaso's account, saying she had deliberately remained silent for months to protect the privacy of those involved.
“Excuse me Morara Kebaso. I walked away privately, I thought we would keep it private!” Mercy said in a statement responding to his remarks.
She said she had spent the past six months choosing to remain silent and “be the bigger person” out of respect for everyone involved.
According to Mercy, she had expected the matter to remain private but decided to respond after Kebaso addressed it publicly.
“For the past six months, I have chosen to be the bigger person and keep this matter private out of respect for everyone involved,” she said.
Mercy accused Kebaso of presenting himself as a victim while failing to acknowledge what she described as the private circumstances that led to their separation.
“It’s quite unfortunate that you’ve decided to play the victim. Allow me to respond!” she added.
A major point of contention in her response was Kebaso's reference to their three children. The former couple have children named Zainah Morara, Garang Morara and MK Junior.
Mercy questioned Kebaso's assertion of respect for her role as their mother, claiming he lacked knowledge of the children's circumstances over the past six months.
“Where do you get the moral authority to mention kids that you have no idea what they’ve been eating for the last 6 months?” she asked.
She further accused her former husband of disrespecting her privately, suggesting that the public remarks had brought personal disagreements into the open.
“You’ve disrespected me in private, I thought you would just keep the disrespect private!” Mercy stated.
Her response marks a sharp escalation in the public exchange between the former couple, after Kebaso initially sought to distance his family affairs from social media scrutiny.
