Former Deputy President and Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has sharply responded to claims by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) linking him to suspects in the murder of Dr. Victoria Mutiso.
In a statement issued on Friday, August 7, Gachagua dismissed the allegations, challenging investigators to follow proper legal procedure instead of making public claims.
He maintained that he would not present himself to the DCI, insisting that any engagement should be conducted formally at his residence.
“I was in Wamunyoro, and if you think someone called me, why don't you come to my home and I will write a statement because I cannot come to you. I am above the level of DCI and the police,” Gachagua stated.
The remarks come days after DCI officials claimed that the former Deputy President had been in communication with at least one of the suspects under investigation in the high-profile killing.
However, authorities have not publicly disclosed the nature or context of the alleged contact, and no charges have been preferred against Gachagua.
In his response, the DCP leader accused the investigative agency of deflecting attention from deeper issues within the security apparatus.
He argued that the claims were part of an attempt to shield police officers from scrutiny.
“You are saying that the suspects spoke to Riggy Gee because you do not want to admit that police officers are the ones giving information to Kenyans and leaders. You have lost the civil service,” he said.
Gachagua further suggested that information flow between citizens, leaders, and security officers is common, questioning why such communication was being framed as suspicious.
He reiterated that the focus of the investigation should remain on identifying and prosecuting those directly responsible for Dr. Mutiso’s killing.
The murder of Dr. Victoria Mutiso has drawn widespread public attention, with detectives pursuing multiple leads and detaining several suspects.
The case has also sparked debate over transparency and accountability within Kenya’s security agencies.
Gachagua’s response now adds a political dimension to the probe, as scrutiny intensifies over both the conduct of investigators and the broader handling of the case.
