A fire broke out on Friday night at the private Upper Hill office of former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, prompting an emergency response from Nairobi County firefighters.
Nairobi County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Citizen Engagement and Customer Service Geoffrey Mosiria confirmed the incident, stating that he received a distress call directly from Sonko as the fire started.
According to Mosiria, the former governor requested immediate intervention from the county’s fire emergency response team.
“I immediately contacted our fire team, and they responded promptly and managed to put out the fire before it could cause further damage,” Mosiria said in a statement.
He added that he personally accompanied firefighters to the scene to assess the situation and support the response efforts.
The cause of the fire had not been established by the time of publication, with authorities expected to launch investigations to determine the source and extent of the damage. No casualties were reported.
Mosiria reassured the public that Sonko was safe, urging calm while also calling for prayers. “I wish to confirm that H.E. Mike Sonko is safe, and there is no need for alarm,” he said.
The incident has also drawn attention to Nairobi’s fire response infrastructure, with Mosiria noting that some of the systems deployed during the emergency were initiated during Sonko’s tenure as governor.
He referenced the construction and equipping of Kangundo Road and Waithaka fire stations as part of the former administration’s efforts to strengthen emergency services.
“Today, the very systems he helped put in place have come to his rescue during a time of need,” Mosiria noted, framing the incident as a reflection of the long-term value of public infrastructure investment.
He further urged leaders to prioritize sustainable systems that continue serving citizens beyond their time in office, emphasizing the importance of continuity in public service delivery.
