The death of Joseph Njau Ngendo in June 2022 remains one of the most intriguing episodes surrounding a string of mysterious killings that shocked Kenya, with his past in a major narcotics case adding another layer to the circumstances surrounding his death.
Ngendo, an aspiring politician and former anti-drug abuse campaigner, disappeared on June 17, 2022. Two days later, his body was among those discovered in Lari, Kiambu County, alongside the bodies of several other men.
His death came against the backdrop of a controversial past involving narcotics investigations.
In February 2019, Ngendo was arrested by anti-narcotics detectives in Westlands, Nairobi, after police reportedly recovered about five kilogrammes of heroin concealed inside pawpaw fruits. The drugs were estimated to have a street value of more than Sh15 million.
According to police reports at the time, investigators suspected that Ngendo was part of a wider drug-trafficking network operating in Nairobi. Detectives alleged that he had travelled between Kenya and Uganda and had links to individuals involved in the narcotics trade.
Ngendo, however, denied being a drug trafficker. He reportedly maintained that he had been framed by a cartel that he had been campaigning against.
The arrest presented a striking contrast to his public image. Before the narcotics case, Ngendo had been known as an anti-drug abuse campaigner, with reports indicating that he addressed young people about the dangers of drugs and substance abuse.
He later ventured into politics and sought the Njiru MCA seat in Kasarani on a Jubilee Party ticket.
Years after his arrest, Ngendo's name resurfaced under far more disturbing circumstances.
His disappearance in June 2022 was followed by the discovery of his body in Lari. The discovery came during investigations into the disappearance of Frankline Obegi and other men, whose bodies were also eventually found in the area.
Reports indicated that the victims had suffered violent deaths, with investigators suspecting that some had been strangled. The condition in which the bodies were found raised concerns that the men had been abducted before being killed and their bodies dumped in the area.
The deaths triggered intense public interest, particularly because Obegi and the other victims were associated with online money-making activities, while Ngendo had a documented history involving a narcotics investigation.
Ngendo's previous drug case consequently became an important part of questions surrounding his death. Investigators and journalists examined whether his past associations could have offered clues about what happened to him.
However, there has never been publicly established evidence conclusively proving that Ngendo was murdered because of a drug transaction or that his earlier narcotics case directly caused his death.
The distinction remains important because allegations surrounding the drug trade and the circumstances of his killing have not necessarily been proven in court.
A Kenya Gazette notice published in 2023 subsequently confirmed that Ngendo had died at Lari on June 19, 2022, while proceedings relating to his estate were initiated by his family.
His story therefore remains a complicated one: a man who publicly campaigned against drug abuse, was later arrested over a substantial heroin haul, entered politics and ultimately died in a mysterious and violent incident alongside other men.
More than four years later, Ngendo's death continues to draw attention because of the unanswered questions surrounding the killings in Lari and the possible connections between the victims' activities, criminal networks and the events that preceded their deaths.
