Mumias East Member of Parliament Peter Salasya has challenged Citizen TV journalist Yvonne Okwara to seek clarity from Nairobi Senator and Linda Mwananchi leader Edwin Sifuna on controversial issues surrounding the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Sifuna is set to appear for an interview on Tuesday night, with the discussion expected to touch on political developments, governance issues and his position on key national debates ahead of the 2027 General Election.
In a message directed to Okwara, Salasya proposed a series of questions he believes would help Kenyans understand Sifuna’s current position on Gachagua’s impeachment and the political events that followed.
One of the questions Salasya wants addressed is whether Sifuna still maintains that Gachagua was rightfully removed from office and the reasons behind his position.
“Does he still maintain that H.E. Rigathi Gachagua was rightfully impeached? What is the basis of his position today?” Salasya asked in his message.
The former Deputy President was impeached by the National Assembly and later removed from office by the Senate in 2024 following accusations that included alleged violation of the Constitution, abuse of office and undermining government policies. Gachagua denied the allegations, terming the process politically motivated.
Salasya also wants Sifuna to respond to claims that money was allegedly used to influence the impeachment process.
The lawmaker raised public allegations that KSh 150 million was distributed to influence the proceedings and asked Sifuna to clarify whether he received any funds linked to the process.
“There have been public allegations that KSh 150 million was distributed to influence the impeachment process. What is his response to those allegations? Can he categorically state whether he received any such funds, and if so, explain the purpose for which they were used?” he said.
The claims have sparked political debate, although individuals accused of involvement have not been found guilty of wrongdoing in relation to the allegations.
Salasya further asked whether Sifuna’s position on the impeachment remains unchanged following subsequent legal developments involving Gachagua.
He also wants the Nairobi senator to state whether he believes courts should allow the former Deputy President to seek elective office in future elections.
“In light of subsequent legal developments, does he still believe the impeachment was justified? Additionally, does he believe the courts should allow H.E. Rigathi Gachagua to contest for public office in the upcoming elections?” Salasya posed.
The questions come amid renewed political activity as leaders position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections, with the fate and political future of prominent figures such as Gachagua continuing to attract national attention.
Sifuna, who has emerged as one of the leading opposition voices, has previously defended his political positions while criticising government policies and calling for accountability in public affairs.
His Tuesday night interview is expected to provide a platform for him to respond to various issues shaping Kenya’s political landscape.
