Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku has downplayed Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s rising political profile, stating that the opposition figure has not reached the threshold to pose a serious challenge to President William Ruto ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV on Monday, July 27, Ruku argued that while Sifuna’s popularity is growing, it remains limited in scope and unlikely to disrupt established political heavyweights.
“Sifuna has not reached the threshold of being a potential threat to any serious political players like Ruto in Kenya. He is not a threat at all,” Ruku said.
The CS, however, acknowledged Sifuna’s steady rise within opposition ranks, noting that the Nairobi senator is outperforming some seasoned politicians in recent opinion polls.
“He is coming up better than Kalonzo Musyoka and Fred Matiang’i, which is something impressive,” he added.
Ruku’s remarks come against the backdrop of recent surveys that have placed Sifuna among emerging presidential contenders, with support hovering around the 10 to 15 percent mark nationally.
The senator’s visibility has grown through consistent criticism of the Kenya Kwanza administration and active grassroots mobilization.
Despite this upward trajectory, Ruku maintained that Sifuna’s ceiling remains limited.
“I do not anticipate that he will be able to go beyond 15 percent, which is fairly good,” he said.
The Cabinet Secretary further suggested that President Ruto’s current poll numbers do not reflect his full political strength, citing the absence of an active re-election campaign.
“Ruto has not rolled out his campaign machine up to now. He is very busy concentrating on the programs which are going to change the nation,” Ruku stated.
