Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested a suspect linked to the murder of Technical University of Kenya (TUK) lecturer Edgar Mokua, whose disappearance earlier this month sparked concern among family and colleagues.
Mokua was last seen on July 6, 2026, after leaving his residence in Lavington at about 4:20 p.m.
When he failed to return home, his family reported him missing at Muthangari Police Station, triggering a search that would later uncover a grim outcome.
“After unsuccessful efforts to trace him, his family reported him missing, prompting investigations into his whereabouts,” the DCI said in a statement.
His body was discovered on July 11 at the City Mortuary, where it had been moved days earlier after being recovered along Kamiti Road near Woodcreek Academy by officers from Kiamumbi Police Station.
According to investigators, the case took a complex turn, necessitating a takeover by homicide detectives who retraced Mokua’s final movements on the night he disappeared.
“Detectives established that on the night he disappeared, Mokua spent several hours at Kettle Club in Lavington before proceeding to Ibiza Club at Lavington Mall in the company of two men and a woman,” the statement noted.
While at the club, Mokua reportedly interacted with a woman seated alone at the counter. CCTV footage later showed the two leaving the premises together at around 4:41 a.m., shortly after his companions had departed.
“Outside the club, they boarded a grey Toyota Ractis, registration number KBZ 002R,” the DCI added, noting that the same vehicle was later used to dump his body along Kamiti Road.
Following forensic analysis and intelligence leads, detectives arrested Richard Gikuhe Mbugua in Ruiru, placing him at the crime scene.
“Guided by forensic intelligence, detectives launched an intensive manhunt that culminated in the arrest of the suspect, who has been forensically linked to the scene,” the DCI stated.
The vehicle believed to have been used in the crime has since been recovered and detained as evidence.
A post-mortem examination did not immediately establish the cause of death, with authorities now awaiting toxicological results to determine whether Mokua may have been drugged.
The suspect remains in custody pending arraignment, as detectives continue to pursue additional suspects believed to be involved in the killing.
