A dramatic high-speed chase along the busy Eldoret-Nakuru Highway has ended in the arrest of two suspected drug traffickers and the seizure of cannabis worth Sh3.3 million, according to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
In a statement released on Monday, July 27, detectives said the operation was intelligence-led, involving officers from the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) in Nakuru supported by K9 handlers.
The team had laid an ambush targeting a blue Nissan Note, registration number KDN 836H, believed to be ferrying narcotics.
Police signaled the vehicle to stop, but the driver reportedly ignored the order and accelerated, triggering a high-speed pursuit.
Officers said the suspect drove recklessly along the highway, even after the vehicle sustained a deflated front tyre during the chase.
“The driver made a dangerous U-turn at the KFA Roundabout and sped towards the Eveready area on a damaged rim,” the DCI noted, highlighting the risk posed to other road users.
The chase came to an abrupt end when the suspects abandoned the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot. However, detectives swiftly pursued and apprehended the two before they could escape.
A subsequent search of the vehicle led to the discovery of five sacks containing cannabis sativa weighing approximately 110 kilograms. Authorities estimated the street value of the consignment at Sh3.3 million.
The suspects, identified as Emmanuel Wesonga and Stephen Daria, are currently in police custody undergoing processing. Detectives indicated that the duo will be arraigned in court once investigations are complete.
The seized narcotics have been secured as exhibits as part of the case.
The incident underscores ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to crack down on drug trafficking networks operating along major transport corridors.
The Eldoret-Nakuru Highway is a key route linking parts of the Rift Valley and beyond, making it a strategic target for anti-narcotics operations.
Police have urged members of the public to share information that could assist in dismantling drug trafficking syndicates, warning that traffickers will face the full force of the law.
