The Federation of Women Lawyers in Kenya (FIDA-Kenya) has welcomed the High Court’s decision to convict former Migori Governor Okoth Obado and two others in the murder of Sharon Otieno, terming the ruling a significant step toward justice after nearly eight years.
In a press statement issued on Thursday, July 23, 2026, FIDA-Kenya said the judgment marks a critical milestone in a case that has tested the resilience of the victim’s family and the judicial system.
The organization noted that the family remained steadfast in their pursuit of accountability for Sharon and her unborn child throughout the lengthy legal process.
“The judgment marks a significant milestone in a case that has spanned nearly eight years and has tested the resilience and patience of Sharon’s family,” the statement read.
FIDA-Kenya, which has been part of the legal process as counsel watching brief for the family, commended the High Court for its handling of the complex case.
The body also praised the prosecution for its diligence in presenting evidence and ensuring the matter proceeded despite numerous challenges over the years.
The lawyers’ association further acknowledged the role of witnesses who came forward during the trial, describing their testimony as critical in securing the conviction.
It also highlighted the determination shown by Sharon’s family in seeking justice under difficult circumstances.
While welcoming the verdict, FIDA-Kenya emphasized that no court decision can reverse the loss suffered by the victim’s family.
However, it noted that the ruling reinforces public confidence in the rule of law and demonstrates that accountability can be achieved through the judicial system.
“While no judgment can restore the life of Sharon and her unborn baby, today’s decision represents an important step toward accountability and reinforces public confidence that justice can be achieved,” the statement added.
FIDA-Kenya also pledged continued support to Sharon Otieno’s family as the case moves to the next phase.
This includes the sentencing of the convicted individuals and any subsequent legal proceedings that may arise.
The organization indicated that it will issue a more detailed statement after reviewing the full court judgment.
The conviction of Obado and his co-accused has drawn widespread attention across the country, with stakeholders in the justice sector viewing it as a defining moment in the fight against gender-based violence and impunity.
