Former Nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba has sharply criticised Migori Governor Ochilo Ayacko over his reaction to the conviction of former governor Okoth Obado in the murder of Sharon Otieno, exposing divisions among leaders on how to address the landmark ruling.

Ayacko, in a statement issued shortly after the High Court decision, struck a conciliatory tone, expressing sympathy for all families affected, including those of the convicted.

“I have learnt with deep sadness of the conviction of my predecessor, the former Governor of Migori County, H.E. Okoth Obado, alongside his co-accused, Michael Oyamo and Caspal Obiero,” he said.

“This is a painful moment for all of us and a deeply difficult time for the families of the accused, who must now confront the weight of this judgment and its consequences.”

He added: “At this moment, I wish to extend my thoughts and prayers to all the families affected by this tragedy. May God grant them strength, comfort and peace.”

“I pray for the families of H.E. Governor Obado, Michael Oyamo and Caspal Obiero, that God may give them strength, grace and courage during this difficult period… May God comfort all those affected and grant them peace.”

Orwoba’s rebuke

Orwoba, however, faulted the governor’s remarks as misplaced, arguing they appeared to prioritise sympathy for the convicted over justice for the victim.

“Shetani ashindwe ! This Governor is sad that murderers have been arrested, put to trial, found guilty and have been convicted !” she said.

Referencing the circumstances of the killing, the senator described the case as a stark example of femicide.

“May I remind you that Sharon, a heavily pregnant woman, was butchered to death! These murderers, beat her up then cut her belly open, pulled out the unborn baby and stabbed it eight times !”

She added: “Perhaps the photos of the murder scene should be published in the newspapers so that we can all understand what femicide looks like… Shame on you Governor Ochilo. SHAME ON YOU !”
