Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has issued a strong warning over the state of Kenya’s democracy, urging citizens to approach the 2027 elections with heightened awareness and caution.

Speaking during a public engagement in Kuria on Tuesday, June 22, the Jubilee Party deputy secretary general cautioned that re-electing certain leaders could embolden efforts to weaken constitutional safeguards, including presidential term limits.

“Ukiona watu wanafanya namna hii, alafu mwaka ujao mwawapigie kura warudi huko, hawa watu wataelekea kutoa hata term limits, waanze kufanya uhasama kama ule unafanywa na hiyo serikali,” Matiang’i said.

His remarks come amid ongoing political tensions and growing debate over governance, accountability, and the independence of democratic institutions in Kenya.

While he did not name specific individuals, Matiang’i’s statement appeared to reference broader concerns about the direction of leadership and policy decisions.

The former CS emphasized that the next general election will carry significant weight, framing it as more than a routine democratic exercise.

“We are in danger. Mfikirie tukienda kupiga kura, msifikirie eti tunaenda kupiga kura eti ni hivi hivi, we are fighting for the soul of our democracy and our country,” he stated.

Matiang’i’s comments add to a series of recent political statements by opposition figures who have raised concerns about alleged state overreach and the potential erosion of democratic norms.

These claims have, however, been consistently dismissed by government officials, who maintain that Kenya’s institutions remain strong and functional.
