Political tensions within ODM ranks in Homa Bay County have intensified after former Nyakach MP Odoyo Owidi issued a sharp statement defending Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo Mabona amid growing criticism linked to her perceived stance in internal party disputes.

Owidi, a seasoned political figure in the region, said leaders and residents of Homa Bay have long-standing familiarity with Odhiambo, dismissing attempts to question her character or loyalty.

He argued that recent attacks against the legislator were unnecessary and misdirected, especially given her history in the county’s political landscape.

“We have lived in Homa Bay with Millie Mabona for many years and know her well, so there’s no need to introduce her to us—we know her better than you do,” Owidi said, signaling strong backing for the outspoken MP.

The remarks come in the wake of internal wrangles within ODM, where Odhiambo has recently faced criticism from sections of party supporters and leaders over her calls for unity and internal democracy.

Her position has been interpreted by some as indirect opposition to Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, further fueling divisions within the party.

Owidi, however, criticized what he described as a growing culture of intolerance toward dissenting views, warning that targeting individuals for expressing differing opinions undermines democratic engagement within the party.

“This habit of attacking anyone who seems to disagree with Gladys Wanga is in poor taste. It reflects weakness, not strength,” he stated.

In a strongly worded segment of his statement, Owidi also cautioned against escalating personal attacks in political contests, noting that restraint among leaders has largely been maintained out of mutual respect rather than lack of ammunition.

“Gladys Wanga’s opponents already have enough damaging information about her to hurl insults at her for an entire decade without ever repeating themselves. The only reason people hold back from making personal attacks is out of decency and good manners,” he added.

The former MP further alleged a pattern of political friction within Homa Bay leadership circles, suggesting that tensions have extended beyond individual rivalries to include broader institutional relationships.

“One person cannot keep scheming against every leader in Homa Bay—including the council of elders,” Owidi said, without providing specific details.

His statement is likely to deepen ongoing debates within ODM as the party navigates internal cohesion ahead of future political contests
