A Nairobi court has granted detectives more time to investigate a suspect accused of spreading inciteful content online, marking a new development in a case that has drawn national attention over concerns about hate speech and social cohesion.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed that Bare Sahara Ahmed was presented before the Chief Magistrate’s Court at Kahawa Law Courts, where investigators secured a 10-day custodial order to facilitate further inquiries.
The suspect is currently being held at Kilimani Police Station as authorities deepen their probe into the viral video that triggered the arrest.
According to the DCI, the extended detention will allow officers to conduct a comprehensive forensic analysis of digital evidence linked to the case.
This includes examination of call data records, financial transactions, and other electronic materials believed to be relevant in establishing the intent, origin, and potential impact of the remarks captured in the widely circulated clip.
The case stems from an earlier operation in which detectives tracked and arrested the suspect following the emergence of the video on social media platforms.
Authorities described the content as inciteful and capable of undermining national unity, prompting swift intervention amid rising concerns over the misuse of digital platforms to spread divisive narratives.
Investigators are now focused on piecing together the broader context of the statements, including whether the content was part of a coordinated effort or an isolated incident.
The DCI indicated that the findings from the forensic analysis will be critical in determining the next course of legal action, including possible charges related to hate speech and ethnic incitement.
In its latest statement, the agency emphasized that the move to seek custodial orders reflects a firm stance against offenses that threaten peaceful coexistence.
Authorities reiterated that safeguarding national cohesion remains a key priority, particularly at a time when online platforms continue to amplify public discourse at an unprecedented scale.
“The action underscores our commitment to upholding the rule of law and addressing offences that threaten national cohesion and peaceful coexistence,” the DCI noted.
The agency also issued a renewed warning to the public, urging Kenyans to exercise caution and responsibility when sharing or creating content online.
Officials cautioned that freedom of expression, while constitutionally protected, is not absolute and must be exercised within legal limits to prevent harm to others or the broader society.
The incident highlights growing scrutiny by law enforcement agencies over digital communication, especially content perceived to incite division along ethnic or political lines.
In recent years, authorities have stepped up monitoring of online spaces, citing the potential for inflammatory material to trigger unrest or deepen societal tensions.
As investigations continue, the suspect is expected to remain in custody until the lapse of the 10-day period, after which detectives may seek further directions from the court based on the progress of the case.
The DCI has called on the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified or inflammatory information, warning that such actions could escalate tensions and attract legal consequences.
