Jacob Juma’s assassination on May 5, 2016, marked one of the most high-profile killings in Kenya’s recent political history.

Shot seven times inside his bulletproof Mercedes-Benz along Ngong Road, Juma’s death was not a random act of crime—it was a targeted execution that underscored the lethal intersection of wealth, politics, and corruption in the country.

Born in 1971 in Khasoko village, Bungoma County, Juma rose from modest beginnings to amass wealth across construction, real estate, agriculture, and mining.

By his mid-20s, he was already a millionaire, a rarity in Kenya’s business landscape.

But for Juma, wealth was not an endpoint; it became a platform from which he confronted entrenched corruption and political malpractice that had long defined the country’s governance.

Juma’s criticisms were unapologetic and public. He accused senior government officials under President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto of participating in massive scandals, including land fraud, procurement irregularities, and misappropriation of public funds.

His alignment with the late opposition leader, Right Hon. Raila Odinga, positioned him at the heart of political opposition, making him a prominent and dangerous voice against the establishment he once navigated.

Months before his death, Juma reportedly warned friends and colleagues that his life was under threat.

His fears were realized that evening when, at around 9:30 p.m., near Lenana School on Ngong Road, his bulletproof vehicle was ambushed.

The attack was precise: seven bullets struck him—two to the chest and five to the neck—yet no valuables were taken.

Phones, cash, and documents remained untouched, signaling a politically motivated hit rather than a robbery.

Analysts have long speculated that the killing was designed to send a message. Juma had exposed financial malpractices tied to major state contracts, including public works projects linked to the construction and energy sectors.

His outspoken campaigns threatened the reputations and interests of high-level politicians who relied on patronage networks to consolidate power.

Some investigators suggest that the crime scene may have been staged, with Juma intercepted elsewhere and placed along Ngong Road to mislead authorities.

The perpetrators meticulously avoided CCTV coverage and disappeared without a trace.

The lack of arrests or convictions in Juma’s murder underscores a persistent challenge in Kenya: the ability of politically connected actors to operate with impunity.

His death became emblematic of the risks faced by whistleblowers and business figures who challenge entrenched elites.

It also exposed systemic weaknesses in Kenya’s security and investigative frameworks, raising questions about state complicity and the protection of dissenting voices.

Jacob Juma’s life and death reveal a chapter in Kenya’s political history where speaking truth to power carried existential risk.

As a self-made billionaire who dared to confront corruption, he became both a symbol of resistance and a cautionary tale.

His assassination continues to haunt the nation.
