Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah has sharply responded to claims by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, accusing him of orchestrating violence and spreading ethnic division ahead of a planned political rally in Kikuyu.

In a detailed letter dated April 10, 2026, addressed to Inspector General Douglas Kanja, Ichung’wah dismissed Gachagua’s earlier claims of a plot to disrupt his rally, instead alleging that the former deputy president is the one behind a “deliberate campaign of incitement, hate and violence” targeting residents of Kikuyu Constituency.

Ichung’wah claimed that over the past two weeks, Gachagua has intensified rhetoric aimed at creating disharmony among communities, accusing him of pursuing a politically motivated agenda rooted in ethnic division.

He further alleged that Gachagua had enlisted the support of a vernacular radio presenter from Kameme FM to amplify what he described as “a campaign of hatred,” drawing parallels to historical cases of media-driven ethnic incitement.

The Majority Leader went further to cite past incidents, alleging that violence linked to Gachagua’s political activities had previously caused destruction in Kikuyu.

He referenced events on June 25, 2024, when the Kikuyu NG-CDF offices were allegedly torched, and similar unrest on June 25, 2025, where government offices and courts were reportedly attacked.

Ichung’wah also claimed that his private residence and his parents’ home were targeted during the unrest, insisting that these incidents are documented and part of public record.

In the letter, Ichung’wah alleged the existence of a coordinated network mobilising individuals to cause disruption during the upcoming rally.

He claimed that political operatives allied to Gachagua were recruiting and transporting groups from multiple counties, including Nairobi, Murang’a, Kirinyaga and Nyandarua, to Kikuyu Town.

He further alleged that intelligence reports indicated active mobilisation efforts in areas such as Gitaru and Githurai, as well as parallel activities in Laikipia linked to Gachagua himself.

According to Ichung’wah, the alleged operation is designed to trigger violence, destroy property and create a crisis that could later be exploited politically.

The MP also raised concerns about targeted economic sabotage, claiming that businesses associated with his family in Kikuyu Town had been singled out as potential targets.

He urged the Inspector General to treat the intelligence as credible and take preventive action to secure lives and property.

Ichung’wah referenced recent remarks allegedly made by Gachagua during a funeral in Laikipia, describing them as inflammatory and amounting to an “open threat” against the people of Kikuyu.

He argued that such statements reinforce concerns about incitement and questioned Gachagua’s intentions in calling for changes to police deployment during the rally.

In a direct rebuttal to Gachagua’s claims of potential police complicity, Ichung’wah defended security agencies, warning against what he termed as attempts to undermine law enforcement.

He cautioned the Inspector General against withdrawing security personnel, arguing that such a move could expose residents to orchestrated violence.

The Majority Leader also questioned the timing and manner in which Gachagua communicated his concerns, noting that the former deputy president’s letter was shared publicly on social media rather than through established security channels.

He interpreted this as a strategic move aimed at shaping public perception rather than addressing genuine security threats.

Ichung’wah maintained that Kikuyu Constituency has historically hosted leaders from across the political divide without incident, citing recent visits by opposition figures that proceeded peacefully.

He argued that there should be no exception for Gachagua, provided political activities are conducted within the law.

He concluded by urging the National Police Service to maintain a strong security presence during the planned rally, emphasizing the need to protect residents, businesses and public order.
