Social media influencer Makiadi has stirred online debate after sharing claims suggesting that some Uber drivers experience unsolicited romantic or suggestive advances from certain female passengers after completing trips in upscale neighbourhoods.
In a post on X, Makiadi alleged that some drivers describe situations where older single women, particularly in affluent areas, remain in vehicles longer than necessary after arriving at their destinations, despite having completed payment and in some cases leaving tips.
“Most Uber drivers have confessed that, after dropping off older female clients in Uptown, many of them—having reached their destination, paid for the trip, and even left a tip—still linger in the passenger seat.”
He further claimed that such interactions occasionally place drivers in uncomfortable positions, with some reportedly feeling pressured to navigate awkward personal advances while still on duty.
According to his narration, some drivers say passengers sometimes initiate closer physical proximity or personal conversations that go beyond standard rider-driver interactions.
The influencer linked the alleged behaviour to emotional loneliness among some affluent urban residents.
“The more courageous ones move to the front seat, the engine still running, and lock eyes with the frustrated driver who is being chased by loan sharks.”
In his post, Makiadi also suggested that some of these interactions take on an emotionally charged tone, describing what he claimed were confessions of loneliness from passengers in wealthy neighbourhood.
“Then, while pointing at her huge mansion and shyly holding his hand, she says in a low, bedroom voice, ‘Unaona naishi maisha ya utajiri bure, lakini hakuna mtu ananishughulikia!’”
However, these claims remain unverified and are based solely on anecdotal accounts shared on social media. No evidence has been independently provided to substantiate the allegations.
Ride-hailing companies such as Uber have consistently maintained that both drivers and passengers are required to adhere to strict community guidelines.
The platforms also provide in-app reporting systems to address any form of inappropriate conduct or harassment.
The post has triggered mixed reactions online, with some users arguing it highlights evolving social dynamics in urban Kenya, while others dismissed it as exaggerated storytelling aimed at engagement.
