Former Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu has formally written to former President Uhuru Kenyatta, raising concerns over Jubilee Party’s direction and seeking clarification on the reported endorsement of former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i as the party’s 2027 presidential candidate.

In a detailed letter dated March 3, 2026, Wambugu, who identifies himself as the Acting Convenor of the Jubilee Aspirants Forum 2027, questioned the process through which key decisions regarding alliances, zoning and leadership have been reached within the party.

He asked whether Dr Matiang’i has been formally adopted as Jubilee’s sole and exclusive presidential candidate for the 2027 General Election, and if so, on what constitutional or procedural basis the decision was made.

Wambugu further sought clarity on whether the party’s internal democratic framework allows other qualified members to contest for the presidential ticket.

The former legislator said uncertainty around the party’s presidential flagbearer and possible cooperation agreements with other political formations has caused anxiety among grassroots aspirants planning to vie for seats in 2027.

He noted that lack of communication on zoning or negotiated arrangements risks disadvantaging aspirants who may invest resources in regions potentially reserved for coalition partners.

Wambugu also raised concerns about diminished Jubilee Party branding during recent political engagements, arguing that the absence of visible party merchandise and messaging has created perceptions that the party may be financially constrained or ceding political ground to other formations.

In his letter, he urged Kenyatta, as party leader, to provide an official written response clarifying Jubilee’s position on alliances, zoning arrangements and the presidential candidature question.

He emphasized that transparency and consultation are essential to maintaining trust within the party and preventing internal friction.

The Jubilee Aspirants Forum 2027, according to Wambugu, has been constituted to strengthen internal democracy, coordinate aspirants and advocate for fair and transparent nomination processes ahead of the next general election.

The developments come amid heightened political realignments as parties position themselves for 2027.

Jubilee’s eventual stance on its presidential flagbearer and potential coalition arrangements is expected to significantly shape the opposition landscape in the coming months.
