Meru County politics has been thrown into the spotlight once again, this time with a sharp rebuke from former NTSA Director Mithamo Muchiri following the announcement of former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi that he intends to contest the Meru gubernatorial seat in 2027.

Speaking on Monday, Muchiri did not mince words, describing Linturi’s bid as a “disgrace” to the Ameru community.

“Hon Mithika Linturi was given a job by the President. He supplied goat’s manure, droppings to the farmers, including to the farmers in Meru. He is a disgrace to Ameru. He is ineligible to occupy a public office,” Muchiri asserted.

Linturi’s announcement came with a detailed pitch to the people of Meru, positioning himself as a leader capable of restoring the county’s political, economic, and social prominence.

He claimed that Meru had “lost direction” due to weak and compromised leadership, leaving farmers struggling, professionals sidelined, and youth disillusioned.

Linturi argued that his over 15 years of leadership experience—including ten years as Igembe South MP, five years as Meru Senator, and service as Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture—equipped him with the knowledge of legislation, policy, budgeting, and administration to advocate effectively for the county.

He also highlighted his recognition by the Njuri Ncheke Council of Elders as the Ameru spokesman, describing it as both an honour and a responsibility to uphold unity, courage, integrity, and service.

Linturi outlined an ambitious plan to modernize agriculture, strengthen farmer cooperatives, improve access to irrigation, provide subsidized seeds and fertiliser, and secure better markets for produce.

He cited achievements during his tenure as Agriculture CS, including registering millions of farmers for targeted government support and delivering record tea bonuses.

Linturi further criticized the current leadership for sycophancy, arguing that Meru’s development should not depend on leaders “worshipping the president” but rather on self-reliant and accountable governance.

He called for a fresh team of courageous leaders to empower farmers, youth, and professionals while restoring accountability in county government.

Muchiri’s criticism directly challenges Linturi’s claims of competence and service to the county, with the former NTSA head questioning his record in agriculture and suitability for elective office.

“The people of Meru deserve leaders who uphold dignity and integrity,” Muchiri said, suggesting Linturi’s past performance falls short of these standards.
