Meru County politics has taken a decisive turn as former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi has officially declared his intention to run for the gubernatorial seat in the 2027 elections.

Linturi has framed his bid as a mission to restore Meru’s political, economic, and social prominence.

Taking to social media, Linturi said his decision followed “deep reflection and wide consultations” with residents of Meru.

He painted a picture of a county he believes has lost direction under current leadership, citing struggles among farmers, sidelined professionals, and disillusioned youth.

“Meru has lost its voice at the national table… this must change,” he emphasized.

Linturi brings over 15 years of experience in national leadership, having served as Igembe South MP for a decade, Meru Senator for five years, and later as Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture.

He stressed that his knowledge of legislation, policy, budgeting, and administration positions him to advocate effectively for the county.

He also highlighted his recent recognition by the Njuri Ncheke Council of Elders as the Ameru spokesman, describing it as both an honour and a responsibility.

“It reinforces my commitment to uphold the values of unity, courage, integrity, and service that define the Ameru community,” he said.

The former CS outlined a detailed agenda for revitalising Meru’s agricultural sector, which he described as the backbone of the local economy.

His plan includes strengthening farmer cooperatives, modernising agriculture, providing subsidised quality seeds and fertiliser, improving irrigation, and securing better markets for produce.

Linturi cited achievements during his tenure in the agriculture ministry, including registering millions of farmers for targeted support and delivering record tea bonuses.

He was also critical of the county’s current leadership, accusing them of prioritising sycophancy over service.

“Meru contributed voted overwhelmingly for this administration, and our people deserve respect and tangible returns. Yet our leaders worship the president to get development,” he said.

Linturi concluded by appealing to Meru voters to embrace change in 2027.

“I ask the people of Meru to choose courage over complacency, unity over division, and progress over stagnation. Together, we will restore Meru’s pride, prosperity, and its standing in the national arena,” he stated.
