Kirinyaga County Women Representative Njeri Maina has expressed shock and outrage following reports that a male teacher allegedly defiled minors at Kerugoya School for the Deaf.

In a statement shared on X, Maina described the acts as a serious violation of the rights and dignity of children, especially those living with disabilities.

“Schools are meant to be safe spaces that nurture growth, learning, and development. Any act of sexual abuse within such an institution is not only criminal but also a profound betrayal of trust placed in caregivers, educators, and administrators,” Maina said.

The lawmaker confirmed that her office is working closely with relevant authorities to ensure a thorough investigation. She emphasized the need for swift, transparent, and impartial action to deliver justice to the affected students.

“We expect a process that guarantees justice for the affected students,” she added.

The allegations have sparked public concern over the safety of vulnerable learners in specialized institutions.

Advocacy groups for children with disabilities have condemned the incident, calling for stricter vetting of school staff and enhanced safeguarding measures to prevent future abuse.

Police in the area are reported to have launched preliminary investigations into the teacher involved, while the Ministry of Education has promised to support the affected students and their families.

Public attention is now focused on ensuring that justice is not only done but seen to be done, reinforcing the principle that no child should face harm within a learning environment.
