Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris has congratulated Supreme Court judge Lady Justice Njoki Ndung’u following Kenya’s nomination of her candidature for a judgeship at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague.

In a statement shared on social media, Passaris praised Ndung’u’s legal career and described the nomination as recognition of her long-standing contribution to justice and the protection of vulnerable groups, particularly survivors of gender-based violence.

Passaris noted that Justice Ndung’u has played a significant role in shaping Kenya’s legal framework, especially through her involvement in the development of the Sexual Offences Act of 2006, legislation widely credited with strengthening legal protections for victims of sexual violence.

“Congratulations to Lady Justice Njoki Ndung’u on Kenya’s nomination to serve as a judge at the International Criminal Court in The Hague,” Passaris said.

She added that Ndung’u’s career has been defined by dedication to justice and advocacy for victims of gender-based violence, saying her work has left a lasting impact both in Kenya and internationally.

“Justice Ndung’u’s lifelong commitment to justice, her pioneering role in shaping the Sexual Offences Act, and her unwavering defense of victims of gender-based violence have left an indelible mark on Kenya and beyond,” Passaris stated.

The Nairobi lawmaker further said the nomination reflects not only Ndung’u’s personal achievements but also the growing influence of Kenyan women in leadership and legal institutions.

According to Passaris, Ndung’u’s potential role at the ICC would strengthen Kenya’s voice in global justice processes while showcasing the country’s contribution to international law.

“Her nomination reflects not only her personal excellence but also the strength and credibility of Kenyan women in leadership and in the law,” she added.
Passaris also expressed hope that Ndung’u will carry Kenya’s values and commitment to justice onto the global stage if elected to the court.

“May God guide your wisdom and strengthen your resolve as you take Kenya’s voice and values to the global stage. Godspeed, my friend. The nation is proud of you,” she said.

Justice Ndung’u currently serves as a judge of the Supreme Court of Kenya. If elected by the Assembly of States Parties, she would join the panel of ICC judges responsible for presiding over cases involving genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Kenya’s nomination places her among candidates expected to compete for the prestigious international judicial position later this year.
