Senior Counsel Charles Kanjama has been elected the 52nd President of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), securing 3,728 votes in a competitive race against Peter Wanyama and Mwaura Kabata.
His election follows a spirited campaign highlighting rule of law, governance, and member welfare, and comes at a time when the society is under intense public scrutiny.
Following Kanjama’s victory, city-based lawyer Soyinka Lempaa issued a pointed statement, urging the new LSK leadership to maintain integrity and “good behaviour.”
Lempaa highlighted Kanjama’s credentials, noting that he graduated from the University of Nairobi with a law degree on November 26, 2001, and stressed the society’s history of conditional support.
“We shall support you during good behaviour,” Lempaa wrote, recalling the society’s previous engagement with former president Faith Odhiambo.
He added that when Odhiambo allegedly deviated from these principles, the legal fraternity held her accountable through courts, public advocacy, and social media.
Lempaa further referenced the late politician Raila Odinga, noting the society’s commitment to upholding ethical standards irrespective of political affiliation.
Lempaa concluded with a stark warning to Kanjama and the incoming council: any deviation from ethical leadership will not be tolerated.
“If Kanjama and the council lose good behaviour, sisi ni wale wale,” he emphasized, signalling that the legal community remains vigilant in defending professional integrity and public trust.
Kanjama, a Senior Counsel since 2022 and managing partner at Muma & Kanjama Advocates, assumes office for a two-year term (2026–2028), with Teresia Wavinya Nicholas as his deputy.
His leadership is expected to guide the society through institutional reforms, professional training, and completion of ongoing projects such as Wakili Towers, reinforcing LSK’s pivotal role in safeguarding constitutionalism and the rule of law in Kenya.
