In Kenya, parenting teenagers comes with its unique set of challenges, from navigating peer pressure to guiding adolescents through difficult life decisions.

Social media has increasingly become a space where parents seek advice, share experiences, and look for support on issues ranging from school performance to personal relationships.

This virtual community often serves as a sounding board for questions that are too sensitive to discuss openly at home or in public.

A Nairobi parent recently turned to the Facebook group Parenting Teenagers Hub for Kenyan Mum's and Dads after a dispute over their teenage daughter’s pregnancy escalated into family tension and emotional stress.

The parent explained that their daughter became pregnant last year during her fourth term at school. When asked, the girl revealed that a male classmate was responsible. Acting promptly, the parent contacted the boy, who initially admitted paternity.

However, the situation quickly deteriorated when the boy’s mother intervened. She reportedly dismissed the matter, saying she “cannot interfere with foolishness” and refused to support the pregnancy.

Following her involvement, the boy denied responsibility, leaving the teenage mother stressed and confused. Attempts by the daughter to reach him for clarity have been met with insults, further worsening her emotional state.

Efforts by the parent to counsel their daughter to distance herself from the boy’s family have also failed, as the teenager fears her child will grow up without a father.

“I was just trying to make the boy’s family aware and responsible, not to create tension,” the parent shared.

This case highlights the complex realities Kenyan families face in dealing with teenage pregnancies, including strained relationships, emotional distress, and uncertainty over responsibility.

Experts advise mediation, counseling, and, when necessary, legal guidance to protect both the teen mother and her child while ensuring accountability.

While online groups offer valuable support and advice, experts stress that real-world resolution often requires engagement with families, schools, and professional counselors.
