A joint operation by security agencies in the coastal region has led to the arrest of two suspects and the recovery of narcotics and stolen property valued at over Kshs 2 million, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed on Thursday.
The suspects, identified as Salim Mafuko Hamisi, 32, and Ali Musa Mwachumwadi, 38, were apprehended in Ukunda Township during an intelligence-led operation.
Officers reportedly recovered 250 grams of a substance suspected to be cocaine, estimated at Kshs 1 million.
In addition, authorities seized a half-full sack containing approximately 35 kilograms of suspected cannabis, valued at about Kshs 1,050,000. Several mobile phones, believed to be stolen, were also recovered during the operation.
Preliminary investigations have linked the suspects to a criminal gang operating along the coastal region.
They are currently in lawful custody awaiting arraignment, while all recovered exhibits have been secured for forensic analysis.
The DCI confirmed that security agencies are intensifying efforts to dismantle the wider criminal network associated with the suspects.
“Additional targets connected to this syndicate are already being pursued,” the agency stated.
The Directorate reiterated its commitment to disrupting drug trafficking and criminal networks, protecting communities, and ensuring that perpetrators of crime are brought to justice.
This operation shows ongoing efforts by law enforcement to curb the flow of illicit drugs along the Kenyan coast, a region that has seen increased criminal activity linked to organized gangs.
Authorities continue to urge the public to provide information that could aid in apprehending criminals and safeguarding communities.
The arrests mark a significant breakthrough in the fight against narcotics and theft in Ukunda, signaling heightened vigilance by security agencies in coastal towns.
