Former Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu has called on Mt Kenya leaders and residents to rally behind Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, describing them as the most senior representatives of the region in the current administration.
In a lengthy statement, Wambugu argued that senior government positions hold strategic value for communities, regardless of personal political differences.
He said his past decision to work with former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua in 2023 was not based on admiration, but on the influence the office wielded for the Mt Kenya region.
He explained that senior public servants had advised him that leadership positions in government can directly benefit local communities.
According to Wambugu, such influence has already been visible, citing recent financial contributions and support extended to families and informal business groups in Nyeri through connections to senior offices.
Wambugu noted that Kindiki now occupies one of the highest-ranking political offices in the country, while Ichung’wah, as Majority Leader, holds a position he described as ranking above Cabinet Secretaries in parliamentary hierarchy.
Despite admitting he did not support the current administration during the election, the former MP said the two leaders now hold office for the duration of the current term and should be supported for the region’s benefit.
He urged Mt Kenya residents to ensure the leaders understand their roles extend beyond national duty to include advocating for regional interests.
Wambugu reflected on earlier efforts by regional leaders to support Gachagua despite political tensions, saying the aim was to influence leadership for the community’s good.
He said those efforts ultimately failed but insisted the same unity should now be extended to current officeholders.
Addressing claims questioning Kindiki’s legitimacy because he was appointed rather than elected, Wambugu defended the constitutional process, noting Parliament previously removed an elected deputy president and that constitutional mechanisms allow for lawful succession.
He concluded by urging Kindiki and Ichung’wah to serve Kenyans diligently while remembering their roots and the expectations of the Mt Kenya region ahead of the 2027 elections.
