Kileleshwa Ward MCA Robert Alai has criticized Siaya Governor James Orengo for invoking the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s death while defending Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna following his removal as ODM Secretary General.
The MCA described Orengo’s comments as a political stunt designed to mobilize supporters rather than address genuine concerns.
“Death as a tool for mobilisation. The same Orengo who hated Robert Ouko and even demanded that he be sacked used the death of the minister to build his career,” the MCA said, referencing Orengo’s past political actions.
The remarks highlight the MCA’s view that Orengo has a history of exploiting sensitive national tragedies for personal or political gain.
The MCA also used a local Luo idiom to underscore their distrust of the governor, saying, “Orengo is the bird the Luo call Achuth. When you see Orengo near you, know that your political obituary is being written.”
The statement paints Orengo as a politically opportunistic figure whose presence signals calculated maneuvering against rivals, according to the MCA.
Orengo, speaking at a press conference alongside Sifuna, Babu Owino, and Winnie Odinga on Thursday, had blamed President William Ruto for the divisions in ODM and the removal of Sifuna.
He defended Sifuna’s record, noting that Raila Odinga never criticized the senator publicly during his lifetime.
Orengo also stirred controversy by raising questions about the circumstances surrounding Raila’s death, suggesting that those responsible remain silent.
The MCA’s response frames Orengo’s comments as inappropriate and politically motivated, warning that such strategies risk undermining public trust in political discourse.
“Using the death of a national leader to settle party scores or boost one’s image is unacceptable,” the MCA added, stressing the need for politicians to maintain respect for historical figures and their legacies.
The exchange reflects growing tensions within ODM following Sifuna’s ouster during the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on Wednesday.
