The National Assembly and the wider Kenyan public are in mourning following the untimely death of Hon. Johana Kipyegon Ng’eno, CBS, the Member of Parliament for Emurua Dikirr Constituency.

The tragic incident occurred on Saturday, 28th February 2026, at approximately 4:45 pm, when a helicopter carrying Hon. Ng’eno and five others crashed in Mosop, Nandi County.

Speaker of the National Assembly, in a formal notification to the House (Notification No. 005 of 2026), expressed profound sorrow on behalf of Parliament, describing Hon. Ng’eno’s death as both untimely and tragic.

The Speaker extended condolences not only to the family of the late legislator but also to the families of the other passengers who perished in the crash.

Hon. Ng’eno, who was serving his third consecutive term in Parliament after first being elected in 2013, had earned a reputation as a dedicated and effective lawmaker.

At the time of his passing, he was Chairperson of the Departmental Committee on Housing, Urban Planning and Public Works and a member of the Liaison Committee. In the 12th Parliament, he served on the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee.

Under his leadership, the Housing, Urban Planning and Public Works Committee significantly advanced Kenya’s housing agenda, notably playing a pivotal role in the passage of the Affordable Housing Act, 2024.

The legislation set a legal framework aimed at increasing access to decent and affordable housing across the country.

Born in 1972, Hon. Ng’eno had a distinguished academic journey. He attended Mogondo Primary School and Maseno National School before pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in International Law at Kyiv TSN University in Ukraine.

He later attained a Master of Arts in International Studies from the University of Nairobi, a Bachelor of Laws degree from Mount Kenya University, and a Postgraduate Diploma from the Kenya School of Law. In September 2025, he was admitted to the bar as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya.

To coordinate support for the family during this difficult time, Speaker of the National Assembly appointed a team led by Hon. Julius Melly, CBS, MP for Tinderet Constituency, assisted by Hon. Mugambi Rindikiri, CBS, MP, along with eight other Members of Parliament.

The team will work closely with the family to manage funeral arrangements and other support initiatives as determined by the family.

Hon. Ng’eno’s death is widely seen as a significant loss to Kenyan politics, particularly in the areas of housing, urban planning, and legislative oversight.

Colleagues remember him as a committed public servant whose contributions left a lasting impact on both Parliament and the communities he served.

His passing marks a sombre moment in Kenya’s political landscape, leaving a void in both the National Assembly and the Emurua Dikirr constituency.
