A Nairobi lawyer has raised eyebrows online, claiming that the Odinga family owes millions in rent at a Kileleshwa home once occupied by the late Beryl Lilian Achieng Mugwari Odinga.

City lawyer Wahome Thuku said Beryl Odinga lived on Mwangi Road from 2013 until her death in early December but did not pay rent.

According to him, the total arrears stand at Ksh5,814,000.

Efforts by the landlord to recover the arrears through legal means have reportedly been obstructed.

“Whenever the landlord sent auctioneers in the past, they were denied entry by officers from Kilimani Police Station,” Thuku said.

He added that two days before Beryl Odinga passed away, auctioneers finally gained access, and Raila Odinga Junior paid about Ksh180,000 towards the arrears.

Attempts to recover the balance after her death were again unsuccessful.

Thuku noted that the late Beryl Odinga, who served on the Nairobi Water Board, also failed to settle utility bills for water and electricity.

“Senator Oburu has not taken steps to settle the balance, despite indications that this would be done after the burial. In my view, it is unfortunate and inappropriate for the matter to remain unresolved,” he stated.

The dispute has drawn public attention because of the high profile of the Odinga family. On the day of Beryl Odinga’s funeral service, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja announced that her son would replace her on the Nairobi Water Board.

The lawyer’s claims raise questions about the responsibilities of estate management and the handling of financial obligations after the death of a public figure.
