A political realignment similar to Kenya’s historic 2002 transition could emerge ahead of the 2027 General Election, lawyer Wahome Thuku has suggested, arguing that opposition factions may unite behind a single candidate to challenge President William Ruto.

In a statement shared on social media, Thuku referenced the “Kibaki Tosha” moment that propelled Mwai Kibaki to power.

He noted that the alliance between rival political blocs at the time was driven less by ideological alignment and more by the shared objective of ending the influence of then President Daniel arap Moi.

According to Thuku, a similar convergence of interests could take shape as opposition leaders weigh strategies to prevent Ruto’s re-election.

He argued that the unifying factor may not be policy consensus but political expediency, as diverse groups rally around a single figure deemed capable of mounting a formidable challenge.

Thuku pointed to former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i as a potential consensus candidate, describing him as credible and electable.

His remarks come amid growing speculation about possible opposition coalitions and the search for a strong contender ahead of the 2027 race.

He also highlighted the ideological diversity among opposition figures, mentioning leaders such as Kalonzo Musyoka and Edwin Sifuna as examples of politicians whose political philosophies differ significantly but may be compelled to cooperate.

The lawyer suggested that recent political mobilization efforts signal momentum toward such an alliance, with large public gatherings and shifting loyalties hinting at a broader strategy to consolidate opposition support.

However, Thuku cautioned that while a unity candidate could boost electoral chances, questions remain about post-election governance and cohesion.

He warned that alliances forged for convenience could face internal strains once the immediate political objective is achieved.
