Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has signalled plans to visit President William Ruto in Nairobi in the coming months, describing the trip as a gesture to restore and strengthen bilateral relations.

Speaking on X on Sunday, Muhoozi said: “In the next few months I am going to visit my big brother, H.E. Ruto. If I made mistakes in the past I am ready to pay cows for my errors. The brotherly relationship between Uganda and Kenya can never be broken.”

The statement shows both a symbolic and culturally grounded approach to reconciliation, referencing traditional East African practices where cows are offered to settle disputes.

The planned visit comes at a time when Kenya and Uganda are navigating a mix of diplomatic tensions and collaborative efforts. Cross‑border issues, especially around Lake Victoria, have caused friction, with Kenyan fishermen reporting harassment by Ugandan security forces.

In December 2025, Kenya’s National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula met Muhoozi to discuss joint measures to secure the lake’s fisheries and protect livelihoods, signalling that practical cooperation remains a priority.

During their meeting, analysts expect both leaders to highlight key issues affecting bilateral relations, including enhanced security coordination along shared borders, joint management of Lake Victoria fisheries, and measures to improve cross-border trade and customs efficiency.

Regional peace and counter‑terrorism cooperation, particularly concerning anti‑Al-Shabaab operations and refugee management, are also likely to feature prominently.
