Journalist Abdikarim Hussein has weighed in on what he describes as a visible transformation in comedian-turned-activist Eric Omondi, who is eyeing the Lang’ata parliamentary seat in the 2027 General Election.
In a Facebook post, Hussein argued that many Kenyans have not noticed that Omondi has abandoned his once-popular cross-dressing comedy skits.
According to the journalist, that phase of performance, while commercially successful, would have posed political challenges as Omondi transitions into elective politics.
“What many people have not noticed lately is that Eric Omondi has left his old style of comedy cross-dressing,” Hussein wrote. He added that the style “never went well with most of his fans” and could have become “an albatross around his neck” given his political ambitions.
Omondi rose to prominence through satirical skits, many of which involved him portraying exaggerated female characters to critique social behaviour and public figures.
The performances earned him national recognition and a strong youth following, particularly on digital platforms. However, as he has increasingly positioned himself as a civic activist and aspiring legislator, his public image has shifted markedly.
Hussein argues that closing that chapter has allowed Omondi to reshape his brand. He cited the comedian’s high-profile walk from Nairobi to Mombasa under the “Sisi Kwa Sisi” initiative as an example of the new direction.
The multi-day trek, which attracted public attention and fundraising support, was framed as a show of endurance and grassroots engagement.
“With that chapter closed Eric has now focused more on proving his masculinity to win over more fans,” Hussein stated, referencing the gruelling nature of the walk.
Omondi has in recent months intensified his activism, addressing governance issues and youth empowerment while signalling his intention to contest the Lang’ata MP seat.
His messaging now centres on structural reform, generational leadership change, and community mobilisation rather than performance art.
As the 2027 race begins to take shape, Omondi’s evolution from entertainer to aspiring lawmaker is likely to remain under scrutiny, with supporters and critics closely watching whether the rebranding translates into electoral viability.
