Fresh details have emerged about a behind-the-scenes political initiative involving former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo aimed at uniting Kenya’s Opposition ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Sources say Obasanjo recently hosted a meeting in Lagos attended by former President Uhuru Kenyatta and Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, where discussions centred on crafting a common strategy to challenge President William Ruto.
The talks reportedly included plans to reconcile Uhuru with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who has fallen out with President Ruto since the 2022 election.
According to insiders, the leaders agreed that the Opposition’s chances in 2027 would depend on rallying behind a single presidential candidate rather than pursuing multiple bids.
A source privy to the Lagos discussions said the meeting marked the formal start of coordinated Opposition engagements.
“Talks between the Opposition leaders picked up after the Lagos meeting. That explains why they are now attending functions together. The unity will be formally sealed when Uhuru meets Gachagua,” the source said.
Jubilee Party deputy leader Jeremiah Kioni downplayed suggestions of tension between Uhuru and Gachagua, saying there is no barrier to the two leaders holding talks.
“There would be no problem if Gachagua and Uhuru meet. Gachagua has wanted to meet Uhuru, and Uhuru has never said he doesn’t want to meet him. Their meeting would be interesting,” Kioni said.
Gachagua’s recent political positioning has fuelled speculation about his role in a possible Opposition coalition, especially as he continues to criticise the Kenya Kwanza administration.
Although no official statement has been issued on the outcome of the Lagos meeting, analysts say the involvement of Obasanjo underscores the seriousness of the talks and signals that preparations for the 2027 race are already gaining momentum.
