Former Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) chairman Macharia Njeru has praised the election of Charles Kanjama as the new president of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), describing it as a victory for integrity and accountability in the legal profession.

Taking to social media, Njeru highlighted that Kanjama’s appeal extended beyond senior lawyers, noting that the electorate sought a leader with an “unblemished record of integrity, consistency, and trustworthiness.”

He added that the Society faces a major project expected to cost hundreds of millions of shillings, and members were keen to entrust someone capable of safeguarding their funds.

Njeru emphasized that in a political climate where many independent institutions face executive encroachment, lawyers were looking for a president who would champion public interest without compromise.

In his acceptance speech, Kanjama acknowledged the competitive nature of the election, congratulating his fellow candidates Kabata and PMO for a robust contest that strengthened the credibility of the outcome.

He thanked the members of the Bar for turning out in large numbers, noting that their participation underscored a demand for “sober, steady, and disciplined leadership.”

“The will of the membership cannot be bent by undue influence. It must always be respected,” Kanjama said, reflecting on the decisive margin by which he won.

He also expressed gratitude to his campaign team, describing the journey from a small group of supporters to thousands of voters as a testament to shared confidence in his leadership.

Looking ahead, Kanjama promised to translate campaign commitments into actionable governance strategies as the new council assumes office in March.

He emphasized collaboration with the incoming LSK Council, from the vice president to all council members, to ensure the Society defends the rule of law and serves its membership with clarity and courage.

He thanked the outgoing LSK leadership for their stewardship, acknowledging their role in maintaining institutional continuity and professionalism.

Njeru’s endorsement positions Kanjama’s leadership as a pivotal moment for the Bar, signaling a renewed focus on transparency, financial prudence, and the protection of public interest within Kenya’s legal framework.
