Six people have been confirmed dead after a helicopter crashed and caught fire in Chepkiep Village, Mosop Constituency, Nandi County, on Saturday evening.

The aircraft, registration 5Y-DSB, was travelling from Nairobi when it reportedly encountered bad weather.

Witnesses said the chopper had initially landed in the forest, with the occupants briefly alighting and taking photographs before taking off again.

It flew for about 300 metres before going down and bursting into flames.

Wreckage of the ill-fated helicopter now lies strewn across a farm in Chepkiep Forest, as security officers secure the scene.

County Police Commander Samuel Mukuusi confirmed that six people were on board at the time of the crash

Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims as investigations into the cause of the accident begin.

Meanwhile, unverified reports circulated online by blogger Cyprian Nyakundi claimed that Johanna Ngeno, the MP for Emurua Dikirr, was feared dead in the crash.

Officials had not confirmed the claim by the time of publication.
