Renowned activist Boniface Mwangi has launched a public appeal urging Kenyans to rally behind Angella Okutoyi, the country’s most accomplished female tennis player, as she prepares to turn professional.
Okutoyi, who currently represents Auburn University in the United States, is in her final year of college tennis.
She made headlines in January 2026 after sharing an emotional post on social media detailing her financial struggles and lack of sponsorship as she prepares to join the WTA Tour.
“Angella Okutoyi, Kenya’s best-ever female tennis player, is playing college tennis for Auburn University. This is her final year, and after graduating, she plans to join the WTA Tour as a professional,” Mwangi wrote on X.
The activist pointed out that despite promises from the government, support for Okutoyi has been slow to materialize.
Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Salim Mvurya had responded to her appeal, stating they would coordinate with the Kenya Tennis Federation to explore support options.
“The government lied, and now we must step up. @Okutoyiangella2 is the reigning African champion and the 2020 Wimbledon Junior Doubles winner. She deserves our support,” Mwangi added, urging Kenyans to contribute via a fundraising campaign on Mchanga.
Okutoyi’s achievements on the court are remarkable.
She is the reigning African champion and made history in 2020 as part of the first Kenyan pair to win a Wimbledon Junior Doubles title.
Her transition to professional tennis marks a critical stage in her career, but without financial backing, sustaining her training and international competitions remains a challenge.
Supporters can contribute to her journey through the Mchanga fundraiser here which aims to ensure she has the resources necessary to compete on the global stage.
Kenya’s sporting community and the public now face a crucial moment: to help Okutoyi realize her potential and carry the nation’s flag onto the world tennis stage.
