EALA MP Winnie Odinga has expressed confidence in ODM acting party leader Oburu Odinga, saying he remains the most suitable figure to guide the party during its transition following the death of long-serving leader Raila Odinga.

Speaking on Citizen TV on Tuesday night, Winnie said ODM was going through a sensitive phase that required steady and experienced leadership.

She argued that stabilising the party after Raila’s death was not a simple task, describing the current moment as one that demanded patience and unity.

Winnie credited Oburu with keeping the party together despite internal and external pressures, noting that he had managed to “steady the ship” at a time when divisions and uncertainty could easily weaken the party.

She said his calm approach had helped ODM weather the storm as it adjusts to new political realities.

She also underscored that Oburu had consistently maintained that his role was temporary.

According to Winnie, the ODM acting leader had publicly committed to overseeing the transition and making room for younger leaders to take up leadership roles once the process is complete.

Reflecting on his long political career, Winnie described Oburu as a leader shaped by decades of determination, loyalty, and public service.

She dismissed claims that internal power struggles could damage his reputation, arguing that at 82, Oburu would not allow his legacy to be dragged into political contests.

Winnie said the Odinga family and a significant section of ODM supporters were comfortable with Oburu holding the acting position, insisting that he was best placed to provide continuity and stability during the interim period.

ODM continues to face debate over its leadership direction as it prepares to define its future following Raila Odinga’s death, with party insiders calling for cohesion and a clear transition framework.
