The United States Mission in Uganda has issued a safety notice to its citizens in the country following the presidential elections held on Thursday, January 15, 2026.
Official election results have not yet been released, amid reports of heightened security tensions.
According to the advisory, security forces have been observed using teargas and firing into the air to disperse public gatherings.
In response, U.S. citizens in Uganda are urged to exercise enhanced caution, avoid large crowds, and limit non-essential movements.

The Mission provided a list of recommended safety measures. Citizens are advised to monitor local media for updates, stay away from demonstrations, and maintain a low profile.
Travelers should remain aware of their surroundings, carry a charged cell phone, and program emergency contacts into their devices.
Additionally, proper identification, including a valid U.S. passport with a current Ugandan visa, should always be on hand.
This advisory comes amid growing concerns from international observers about the conduct of the elections, which have seen reports of clashes and heavy police presence in some areas.
Authorities in Uganda have yet to announce the official results, with both the opposition and ruling party monitoring ongoing vote counts. In the meantime, foreign missions are intensifying safety warnings to their nationals.
