The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) portal experienced widespread technical difficulties shortly after the release of the 2025 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results, preventing thousands of students, parents, and schools from accessing individual scores.

The disruption prompted sharp criticism from prominent blogger Cyprian Nyakundi, who described the recurring portal failures as “the same movie every year.”

Nyakundi highlighted that millions of students attempting to check results at the same time cause the system to collapse, pointing to inadequate traffic management as the core issue.

“Every single year, same movie. Millions of students checking results, and the site collapses instantly. This is basic traffic planning,” Nyakundi said.

He compared the situation to Kenya’s election systems, noting that if the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) can scale operations for elections, KNEC should be able to do the same for exam releases.

The blogger offered practical solutions, recommending the adoption of cloud infrastructure with auto-scaling capabilities.

“AWS, GCP, Azure—just pick one. This isn’t 2009,” Nyakundi emphasized, urging the council to modernize its IT systems to handle high-traffic events.

KNEC has acknowledged the technical glitch and assured candidates and parents that access will be restored as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, students and schools are advised to keep trying the portal intermittently and to remain patient while authorities resolve the issue.

This latest disruption has reignited public debate over KNEC’s readiness to manage digital platforms during high-demand periods, with calls for systemic improvements growing louder.
