The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested a suspected drug trafficker in Diani, Kwale County, days after President William Ruto called for harsher penalties for narcotics offenders.

Hellen Saru Mwajombo, 36, was apprehended during a swift multi-agency operation following actionable intelligence on drug trafficking activities in the coastal town.

Detectives first recovered two green gunny bags stuffed with rolls of cannabis before the suspect led them to her nearby residence.

A thorough search of Mwajombo’s home uncovered an even larger stash of narcotics, including multiple packages of cannabis concealed in a black bag and another green gunny bag.

Authorities also impounded a white Nissan Note, registration number KDS 092K, believed to have been used in transporting and distributing the drugs.

The DCI emphasized that the arrest reflects the agency’s commitment to dismantling drug trafficking networks across the country.

“We remain resolute in our zero-tolerance approach toward traffickers, regardless of status, to ensure a safer, drug-free Kenya for all,” the agency said in a statement.

This operation comes as the government intensifies efforts to curb narcotics distribution following President Ruto’s recent directive calling for stringent measures against drug offenders.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing, with the suspect expected to be arraigned in court as detectives work to trace potential links to wider trafficking networks in the region.

The DCI reaffirmed that continued collaboration with other security agencies will remain central to tackling narcotics trade, particularly along the Coast, which has been identified as a key transit and distribution hub for illegal drugs.
