Police in Kakamega County have recovered 20 kilograms of suspected cannabis during an operation targeting illicit drugs along a major highway in western Kenya.

In a statement shared on X, the National Police Service said officers from Lumakanda Police Station acted on information provided by members of the public to intercept a motor vehicle suspected of transporting cannabis sativa.

The operation was conducted along the Webuye–Eldoret Highway, where officers laid a strategic ambush.

The vehicle, which was travelling from Busia towards Eldoret, was stopped and searched. During the inspection, police recovered two bales containing dry plant material believed to be cannabis, commonly known as bhang. Each bale weighed approximately 10 kilograms.

The driver was immediately arrested at the scene, while the vehicle used to transport the suspected drugs was impounded.

Police said investigations are ongoing to establish the source of the drugs and whether the suspect is linked to a wider trafficking network.

The National Police Service noted that the operation highlighted the importance of public cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking.

According to the police, timely information from citizens continues to play a key role in disrupting the movement of illegal substances.

The Service reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining anti-drug operations across the country, particularly along key transport corridors.

Members of the public have been urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities as authorities work to protect communities from the harmful effects of illicit drugs.
