Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has issued a message of condolence following the death of former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Shakhalaga Khwa Jirongo, who died in a road accident along the Naivasha–Nakuru Highway early Saturday morning.

The message adds to growing national tributes marking the passing of the veteran politician.

In a statement shared on X, Kenyatta said he was joining the people of Lugari and Kenyans across the country in mourning Jirongo’s death.

He described the former legislator as a leader known for strong convictions and an unwavering commitment to public service.

Kenyatta said Jirongo consistently spoke up for young people and remained firm on issues he believed affected the country’s future.

“His courage, wit, and commitment to standing up for what he believed in will forever be etched in the minds of those who interacted with him,” the former president said.

Cyrus Jirongo served as the Member of Parliament for Lugari, a constituency in Kakamega County, during his time in active politics.

He was widely recognised for his vocal presence in national affairs and his engagement with youth-related issues, which placed him among politicians who sought to shape leadership beyond Parliament.

Road accidents remain a major public safety concern in Kenya, with highways linking major towns frequently recording fatal crashes.

The Naivasha–Nakuru Highway, a key transport corridor in the Rift Valley region, has previously been the focus of road safety campaigns due to its heavy traffic.

In his message, Kenyatta extended condolences to Jirongo’s family, friends, and political supporters.

He said his thoughts and prayers were with them during what he described as a difficult moment of loss.

“I pray that God grants them comfort and strength during this time of grief,” he stated.

The death of the former Lugari MP has drawn attention from political leaders and residents of Western Kenya, where Jirongo maintained a strong profile during his public life.

Jirongo’s passing marks the end of a chapter in Kenya’s political history, particularly for Lugari constituents who once elected him to represent their interests in Parliament.
