“Our Strength Is What We Build”: Lawyer Otieno Drops Stirring Message as Kenya Marks 62 Years

Lawyer Willis Otieno has called on Kenyans to embrace unity, creativity, and collective responsibility as the country celebrates the 62nd Jamhuri Day.

In a message shared on X on Thursday, Otieno said the milestone offers an opportunity for the nation to reflect on its progress and renew commitment to building a just and inclusive society.

Otieno noted that Kenya’s resilience has been central to its survival through political transitions, economic pressure, and social challenges.

He said the country’s future will depend on the courage of its people to innovate and work together across communities and generations.

“Today, we honour the spirit of freedom, creativity, and resilience that continues to shape our nation’s story,” he wrote.

He urged Kenyans “never to lose the courage to dream boldly, the confidence to create fearlessly, and the commitment to uplift one another as we forge a more just, prosperous, and empowered Kenya.”

Jamhuri Day, celebrated annually on December 12, marks Kenya’s attainment of independence in 1963 and its transformation into a republic in 1964.

The national holiday is often used by political leaders, civil society, and citizens to reflect on democratic gains, governance challenges, and the nation’s aspirations.

Otieno framed Kenya’s independence journey as a continuous effort requiring active participation from all citizens.

“Our strength lies not in what we inherit, but in what we dare to build together,” he added, underscoring the role of shared responsibility in securing long-term stability.

His message comes at a time when the country is navigating economic recovery efforts, youth unemployment concerns, and ongoing public debates about governance and accountability.
