A section of Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) lawmakers has signalled plans to quit the party ahead of the 2027 General Election, citing discomfort with its cooperation with President William Ruto’s administration and fears over internal party processes.
The MPs, who are closely associated with ODM leader Raila Odinga, are said to be opposed to the party’s working relationship with the Kenya Kwanza government, including talk of supporting President Ruto’s re-election bid.
The developments have fuelled speculation about the future of ODM should Raila Odinga reduce his involvement in active party politics or shift focus to broader national or continental engagements.
ODM has for years drawn its cohesion and electoral strength from Raila’s leadership, making any signs of internal dissent politically significant.
Lawmakers who have publicly or privately signalled an intention to defect include Suba South MP Caroli Omondi, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Saboti MP Caleb Amisi, Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka, Kitutu Chache South MP Anthony Kibagendi, and Uriri MP Mark Nyamita.
While the ODM leadership has not formally responded to the reports, the potential exits could reshape opposition politics as parties position themselves for the 2027 contest.
