Kenya’s legal community is mourning the death of Supreme Court Judge Mohammed Ibrahim, with tributes highlighting his influence on the country’s constitutional and judicial development.
The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) described his passing as a significant setback for the Judiciary at a time when courts continue to play a central role in shaping governance and accountability.
In a statement shared on X, LSK President Faith Odhiambo said Justice Ibrahim served with restraint, clarity, and a strong sense of public duty.
She noted that his understanding of judicial authority went beyond power, framing it instead as a responsibility to safeguard social order and uphold the rule of law.
Justice Ibrahim’s career reflected important milestones in Kenya’s legal history.
He was the first Kenyan from the Somali community to be admitted to the Bar, breaking barriers during a period when the community faced limited access to professional and public institutions.
His achievement has often been cited as part of broader post-independence efforts to expand inclusion within the legal profession.
Before joining the Supreme Court, Justice Ibrahim spent nearly a decade as a High Court judge. During that period, he built a reputation for ethical conduct and consistency in decision-making, qualities that strengthened public confidence in the courts.
His earlier work as an advocate focused on human rights and equality, areas that have remained central to Kenya’s constitutional order since the promulgation of the 2010 Constitution.
Justice Ibrahim was later appointed to Kenya’s inaugural Supreme Court bench, established under the 2010 Constitution to handle presidential election petitions and interpret constitutional disputes.
According to Odhiambo, he distinguished himself as an independent and analytical jurist whose contributions helped shape Kenya’s emerging jurisprudence.

His legal opinions were known for depth, balance, and careful reasoning.
The Supreme Court has in recent years played a critical role in resolving high-stakes political and electoral disputes, placing judges under intense public scrutiny.
Within this context, Justice Ibrahim was regarded by peers as a steady presence who prioritised institutional integrity over personal or political interests.
The Law Society of Kenya extended condolences to Justice Ibrahim’s family, colleagues, and the wider Judiciary.
Odhiambo said his legacy would endure through the legal principles he advanced and the example he set for future generations of Kenyan lawyers and judges.
