A man once known as the “Tree Man” has been given a fresh start after living for years atop a tree along Jogoo Road, surviving on discarded food and enduring public ridicule.

The transformation was announced by Nairobi County CEC for Citizen Engagement and Customer Service, Geoffrey Mosiria.

The man reportedly left his village while in Class 4 seeking opportunities in Nairobi. Poverty and exclusion forced him to take refuge in a tree, where he became a familiar sight for passersby.

“Many asked why I would waste time helping someone like that,” Mosiria said in a statement on X. “But I saw potential, not hopelessness. I saw a human being, not a nuisance.”

Mosiria secured a fully furnished rental home for the man and connected him with employment at Sialkot Motors Ltd as a salesperson.

He now earns KSh 20,000 a month and has regained a sense of dignity and hope.

The CEC emphasized that the story highlights the need for compassion toward marginalized individuals.

“Not everyone on the streets is useless. Not everyone needs condemnation; some need a chance. A little compassion can completely change a life,” Mosiria said.

The man’s story serves as a reminder of the role individual and community action can play in changing lives.

Mosiria urged Nairobi residents to recognize the humanity in all people and to respond to visible suffering with empathy.
