Former Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambungu has praised environmental activist Truphena Muthoni for her focus and determination after she met President William Ruto on Monday.

The meeting comes days after Muthoni set a national record by hugging a tree for 72 hours straight, drawing attention to climate change and environmental conservation.

“Resilience is powerful. Truphena didn’t give up when she missed an earlier chance to go to Brazil,” Wambungu said. “She stayed focused on what she does best — bringing attention to the environmental issues that matter to all of us.”

Wambungu noted that Muthoni’s persistence has now paid off. She will visit Brazil as the official Ambassador for the 15B Tree Planting project, receiving a fully-paid trip for her and her team, alongside the prestigious Head of State Commendation (HSC).

He also poked fun at earlier critics, saying some suggested she should have planted trees for 72 hours instead.

“She chose the spotlight and results followed,” Wambungu added.

Muthoni’s recognition and the government’s backing highlight the growing role of youth in environmental advocacy, with the Environment Ministry planning to integrate her work into the National Climate Action Plan (2023–2027).

Wambungu described her story as proof that determination and focus can turn passion into national and even global impact, inspiring young Kenyans to champion climate action.
